A modified Porsche 911 997 Turbo Cabrio – The Clutch Wasn’t the Only Hard Thing in the Car

Dad’s friend left his car with us for a while. Eventually I got to drive it. A very yellow 2007 911 turbo convertible, with enough power, a loud exhaust, and that sweet Porsche manual. This time, I might be happy writing!

(Warning, I am a Porsche guy. I like Porsches. The 911 and their endurance racing legacy has me by my last remaining testicle and I’ve willingly submitted).

All Porsches have this feeling to them. Like the clunk of an old bmw’s door, the cracking dashboard plastic of some 90’s gm excretion, or the gravel in cylinder noise of a Subaru flat 4 after deciding not to lubricate it’s rod bearings. You feel it in the door handles, it’s the same feeling from the air cooled 911s right up to the 992 gen. Approaching this 997 was no different. The feeling ya get opening the drivers door, the view out the sloping nose, a big tach staring back at you. It’s all perfectly Porsche.

Buuuut instead of talking heritage like every other Porsche hoarding fanatic, slapping an oil diaper under their cars, and trying to convince you about the mythos of the 911 while never having driven theirs more than 100 miles a year, let’s move to something…. Dirtier.

700 or so horse power should suffice? Probably. Boost the crap outta this 911, fuck it, it’s been done before. It’s fast. It’s brutally fast. Car’s AWD with enough power, of course it’s fucking fast. And wonderfully loud. Does it leak misc fluids? Yes. Did we care? Not really.

Fun fact, the Pimp himself can fit inside the frunk. We kept him there for three days feeding him through a straw until he was temporarily tamed.

It’s a 911 turbo, obviously the engine is wonderful. It wails and screams and you hear turbos and become a giddily little smug shit. Shifter? It’s a Porsche, feels perfect. Clutch took some getting used to. You really feel the hydraulics doing their thing and helping you, and when the car is off, it requires thunder thighs to move. Steering? 993 is better but people who bitch about electric steering boxes in these should drive a new bmw or something then come back to the Porsche, and submit themselves for judgement before the ghost of Ferdinand himself.

I tried to take the old 993 to homecoming many years ago. My fat ass got stuck in the roll cage trying to convince my friend that i could fit all three of us in there. She didn’t fair much better.

Very yellow

It was very drivable once you get used to the clutch. For those with an rx8, it’s like that but heavier and more hydraulic-y. First 911 I drove with traction control so I guess that’s something. No rear end wanting to meet the front kinda thing. Is it yellow enough? Be thankful I don’t have interior pictures, the yellow found it’s way in there too.

It’s a 700 hp turbo 911 with a manual, no shit it’s gonna be brilliant.
